. . . Willie N ostalgia is always a potent force. For those (literally thousands) of us, who, from the '40s to the '70s, were solicitors, apprentices, attended the Law Society's lectures and were involved in the activities of the Solicitors' Apprentices Debating Society, Willie O'Reilly is a name and face we will never forget. March 1986 is the month of Willie's 81st birthday and is also the 40th anniversary of his association with the Law Society. From 1946 until his formal retirement some years ago, Willie and his wife, Dymphna (to everyone "Mrs. O") represented whatever is permanent in our memories of Solicitors' Buildings in the Four Courts. The O'Reillys worked and lived there, and there entertained and looked after generations of neophyte solicitors. Willie's retirement marked the transition from the Four Courts to Blackhall Place, but Willie's place in the order of things has, fortunately, meant that he is still an honoured guest (or host!) at the important Law Society functions during the year. Mrs. O'Reilly still has an active part to play, attending, as ever, with charm and kind- ness to the many overnight guests at Blackhall Place. When Willie was first interviewed for the office of warden of Solicitors' Buildings, he came with impeccable credentials. He had for many years been personal bodyguard to the late General Richard Mulcahy, a responsible and at times hazardous occupation. Willie recalls with amusement that Gen. Mulcahy, in a written testimonial, referred to his "intimate and close relation- ship" with Willie, which led to wry queries from the inter- view board! All of us join in wishing Willie and Mrs. O' many years of happy retirement and thank them both for the memories. •
