The Heart of the Matter: Client Relations

Mediation is a process where parties in dispute, with the aid of a Mediator, negotiate their own separation terms. The Family Mediation Service encourages co-operation between the couple in working out mutually acceptable arrangements on all or any of the following:— • Ongoing parenting of children and living arrangements. • Maintenance. • Family Home and Marital Assets. • Other problems related to separation. How it Operates The Service is staffed by a Co-Ordinator, a Secretary and a team of four professionally trained mediators who work to a Committee (Chairman: Jim O'Higgins, Gabriel Kiely, Mary Mulcahy, Eric Plunkett, Joan O'Mahony, John Smith, Chris Morris, Anne McStay). All discus- sions are confidential. The Mediator does not take sides or testify in court on behalf of either party. Both spouses are required to attend all meetings, which vary between 2 and 6 sessions. Where appropriate couples are encouraged to seek outside consultations on the long term tax and legal consequences of different proposals. Only couples who have decided to separate or who have already separated are appropriate for mediation. Mediation is not a marriage counselling or a legal advice service. The service is offered free of charge. For appointment both parties are required to telephone or write to the Secretary. Tel. 728277 /728708 /728475.
