THE INCORPORATED LAW SOCIETY OF

IRELAND Vice-Presidents EUNAN McCARRON BRENDAN MCGRATH

Secretary ERIC A. PLUNKETT

President PATRICK NOONAN

ADMISSION CEREMONY On 13th June, 1968, the President presented Certificates to newly qualified solicitors. Address ing the newly admitted solicitors and their friends the President said. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is a very happy occasion for all of us, me, as much as any of you. It would be impossible not to be affected by the atmosphere of pride and joy and relief of which this room is full and probably the dominant emo tion of relief. You, Ladies and Gentlemen to whom I have given your parchments are naturally happy to be at the end of a" long and arduous period of study, often filled with fear, heartbreak and frus tration and of course the parents and relatives are proud and happy and relieved because they are relieved of the anxiety of watching the student moving from one exam to another with the long anxious waits of the publication of results. That is all behind now and the coveted parchment can be framed, placed on the wall and gazed upon with justifiable pride and joy. I wish all you new solicitors all the happiness and success you could wish for in the practice of your chosen profession. I hope you will not think me pompous or pre- sumptious if I offer a few observations which may be helpful to you in achieving that end. First of all, you must keep firmly before your mind that what you have acquired is a profession and not a trade. The purpose of trading is to make money,
