The Department of Industry and Commerce are examining the laws relating to the grant of patents for inventions and to the registration of designs and trade marks to see whether changes are necessary to suit existing conditions and to comply with international arrangements to which Ireland is a party. The existing laws are contained in the Industrial and Commercial Property Protection Acts 1927-1958 and the statutory rules and orders made thereunder. Any member of the Society with views or suggestions which might be of assistance in connection with the examination is requested to forward them to the Secretary for transmission to the Industrial and Commercial Property Registration Office. FINANCE BILL 1960 By section 9 of the Finance Bill, which has now become law, power is given to the Revenue Com missioners to compel any person carrying on a trade or business, or carrying on any activity which does not constitute a trade or business, to supply information of payments made in the course of the trade or business for services rendered by other persons. It appeared to the Council that the section as drafted might enable the Revenue Commissioners to require information from solicitors and representa tions were made to the Department of Finance and to the solicitor-members of Dail Eireann. APPLICATIONS TO HIGH COURT Country solicitors should note that in all cases where applications are to be made to the High Court, the office copy of the order made under which money was originally lodged or other directions given should be sent to town agents with the other papers. In addition to the original affidavit which is filed a copy for attesting should also be sent with a further copy for use on the making of the applica tion. If notice of filing of an affidavit is to be transmitted it is suggested that a copy of the affidavit be sent for transmission to the solicitor for the notice party for his convenience.
