the Bill. These matters were discussed and An Taoiseach promised to give careful consideration to the Society’s views. A deputation had also been received by Mr. Gerard Sweetman, Minister for Finance, to discuss questions connected with the proposed remission o f the duties at present paid by solicitors and apprentices. The result o f this dis­ cussion had also been satisfactory. The first reading o f the Bill had been taken in Dail Eireann and An Taoiseach had stated that the second reading would T h e President reported that a deputation from the Council had been received by Mr. Patrick O’Donnell, T.D ., Minister for Local Government. A memor­ andum from the Council had been submitted in which it was strongly urged that the present scales o f costs under the Labourers’ Acts are unsatisfactory, and that the costs should be increased. The Minister had promised to give careful consideration to the Society’s views. He had stated that there are a number of other matters between the Council and the Department, which have arisen in recent years and he proposed to have all these matters included in a memorandum which would be sent to the Society. When the memorandum has been received and considered by the Council, it is expected that a further discussion will take place between the Minister and the Society’s representatives. SOCIETY’S DINNER. T he Annual Members’ Dinner will be held at the Royal Hibernian Hotel, Dublin, on Thursday, 4th November, 1954. Seating accommodation will be limited to 220, and members who wish to obtain Dinner tickets are advised to make early application on the enclosed form. Tickets will cost 30/- each, as last year, including wines with meal, and applica­ tions should be accompanied by remittances. There will be no guests. If the demand exceeds the supply, tickets will be allotted in priority of application, but in this event a fair proportion will be reserved for country members.
