property as returned for duty, that the six years' qualifying clause is inserted. It is undoubtedly open to any party accountable for duty to apply to have the value of the property officially determined by the Valuation Commis sioners. They do not appear to be under any statutory obligation to comply with such a request, and in fact they would probably be physically unable to cope with the work if the value of all property passing on death had to be officially determined for the purpose of death duties. The matter has now been raised again by the Irish banks, following representations which have been made by the English Law Society to the British Inland Revenue authorities. The Council have appointed a sub-committee to discuss the matter with the representatives of the banks, and to take the matter up again jointly with the banks' rep resentatives in discussions with the Revenue Com missioners.
