SOLICITORS' GOLFING SOCIETY THE autumn meeting of the Society was held at Portmarnock on the 9th October, 1947, when 30 members took out cards. The Incorporated Law Society's Cup and the President's Prize were won by H. B. Lenihan with a score of 73 net. The Ryan Cup was won by C. M. Ryan with a score of 74 net. The prize for the best gross was won by D. Lynch with a score of 81. There was a tie for the best first 9 holes between M. Matthews and F. McKeever with a score of 37^- each. On a draw the prize went to F. McKeever. The prize for the best second 9 holes was won by J. H. McCarroll with 381. The putting competition was won by W. Menton with a round of 16. The President presided at the dinner, which was held in the Clubhouse, and was attended by 36 members. The toast of the President was proposed by P. R. Boyd, who referred to the enormous amount of time and work which the President had devoted to the Incorporated Law Society during his year of office and to the great interest he had shown in the Solicitors' Golfing Society, and thanked him very heartily for coming all the way from Galway to be present at the dinner, and for the beautiful prize which he presented. In his reply the President said how much he had enjoyed the outing, and said he failed to understand why the Solicitors' Golfing Society was not better supported by the members of the profession, as it provided an excellent oppor tunity for Solicitors to meet in social surroundings and not in their usual contacts in the Courts. The toast of the Captain of the Solicitors' Golfing Society was proposed by D. P. Shaw, of Mullingar, and was replied to by Patrick Glynn. An excellent musical programme was provided by Roderick Tierney, a member of the Society, by Mr. Paddy Henry and Mr. Frank Cowle, with Mr. • J. Cowle at the piano. APPOINTMENT MR. JOSEPH F. SHIELDS, Solicitor, who was for some years Special Examiner to the Society, has been appointed Irish Consul in Boston, U.S.A.
